CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE & AVIGNON
Drive
to CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE. The story begins in the 14th C. when the Pope’s court
moved to Avignon. At that time, one had the idea to plant a small
vineyard where “excellent wines were harvested”. This delicate nectar
was known as the Pope’s wine, a prestigious name, before becoming the
internationally acclaimed Châteauneuf du Pape. There, visit a winery before tasting 3
palatable wines with bread and cheese.
Continue to AVIGNON. While a marvellous city of art and culture,
Avignon is most famous for being home to seven popes during the 14th
century, who chose to reside here rather than in Rome. Enjoy a
delicious brunch buffet in La Mirande, a 4 stars hotel, with all the
charm and the brightness of the XVIIIth century in this charming hotel.
In the afternoon, visit the Pope’s palace. The incredible Palace of the
Popes was constructed primarily during the papacies of Benedict XII and
Clement VI and was one of the largest buildings of its time. You will
visit this fascinating fortress-cum-residence, which consists of
sumptuously decorated chambers, chapels, and passages. Time at leisure
to stroll in the charming walled Avignon. Drive back to Marseille. Total duration: 8 hours 45 mn. Price and special language guide on request.
